Ongoing Projects sponsored by Friends of Grant Park
Last updated: 5 Sept 2009
• Make sure the Natural Areas Management program of Milwaukee County Parks has proper supplies for work in Grant Park
(and for work in "orphan parks" in our area that do not have a
"Friends" group). Our highest priority is helping Parks to
manage agggressive invasives (such as garlic mustard and
Japanese Knotweed) that threaten to overtake Seven Bridges.
• Establish rain gardens to manage 'run-off' from various parking lots in the park
•
Establish a nature trail (signage etc.) along existing walking
paths in the Seven Bridges system. (This work is being done
with a donation made by Bucyrus International, Inc.) Our
'model' for this project is a similar trail that was installed at
Jacobus Park.
• Provide supplimental funding for maintenance and security that cannot be covered by the tight Parks budget.
A number of local groups (Friends of Grant Park, Friends
of the Mill Pond, the Historical Society) paid for new carpeting in the
golf course clubhouse.
The bulk of the funds for this carpet were raised by Friends of Grant Park.
We
recently looked into improving wheelchair access for the restrooms at
Pavilion #5, and found that the entire project is outside of our current
budget. We may revisit this issue in a few years.
We have also been asked to help fund some interior mantenance of
the Golf Course
Clubhouse, which is where most of the FoGP fundraising events are held.
• Work with Parks staff to install bird houses for bluebirds at appropriate locations in the park.
• Host a "community forum" every other year, to allow local residents to meet with public officials who help run the park
Do
you have ideas for other projects that FoGP can take on? Come to
the next monthly meeting. We'd love to hear your thoughts.
